Why the Swamp Fox Drank Vinegar

When I was young, one of my favorite television shows was the Disney hour on Sunday evenings, and some of my favorite episodes were those involving the adventures of the Swamp Fox.

Later I read a book about the Swamp Fox. The Swamp Fox’s real name was Francis Marion. The British Colonel Tarleton gave Francis Marion the name Swamp Fox because he would hide in the swamps after a raid. (If you are not familiar with the adventures of the Swamp Fox, I suggest that you find a good book about him and enjoy it.) Francis Marion was one of the best commanders of the Revolutionary War.

Francis Marion was a small, wizened man. He was swarthy, eagle nosed, and a man of few words. In a time when rum was the drink of choice among soldiers, Marion’s canteen never held anything else but vinegar mixed with water. Was this the secret to his amazing endurance?

Vinegar is a sour liquid used in pickling, processing foods, and for seasoning foods. It’s name come from the French word vinaigre, which means sour wine. However, there are many types of vinegar that are not made from wine. One of these is cider vinegar, which is made from apple juice or cider. This is probably the type of vinegar that Francis Marion was using.

Cider vinegar is a very effective detoxifier for the blood and for various organs in the body, such as the kidneys, bladder, and liver. Thus cider vinegar is a purifier. It has a means of breaking down fatty, mucous and phlegm deposits within the body. It promotes the health of the vital organs of the body by preventing excessively alkaline urine.

Cider vinegar can also help oxidate the blood, which consequently prevents the blood from becoming too thick and gluey. This helps prevent strained heart and blood vessels resulting in high blood pressure. Cider vinegar also promotes digestion, assimilation, and elimination, and it helps neutralize any toxic substance taken into the body. There have been a number of instances where people who had taken a mixture of cider vinegar and water before a meal were unaffected by diarrhea, or digestive upsets, while their companions who ate the same meal were. You might want to take some vinegar with you the next time you travel to a country with bad water.

A number of outstanding authorities have proven the therapeutic advantages of using cider vinegar for numerous complaints ranging from obesity and arthritis. Here are some examples.

Apple cider vinegar has been used as a weight loss remedy for centuries. It is not completely clear on how it works. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that it has stood the test of time as a fat-busting supplement, and has helped countless people to achieve their ideal weight.

The manganese, silicon, magnesium, and calcium found in cider vinegar has been linked in sustaining bone mass, which is important in the fight against osteoporosis.

There have been many cases where people who were in the habit of taking cider vinegar regularly don’t suffer any side effects from food poisoning. The cider vinegar has an antiseptic quality, which seems to render noxious food harmless.

Drinking a teaspoon of cider vinegar has been known to be stop hiccups.

Most of us have woken up in the night with a terrible leg cramp. Taking cider vinegar can help reduce these nasty awakenings.

Free radicals, formed in our bodies through oxidation, have been shown to be indicative in the formation of various cancers. Although cider cannot cure cancer, it is a valuable ally to help fight free radicals.

Lactic acid in muscles is the cause of the muscles feeling sore and stiff. By adding some apple cider vinegar to your diet, it could assist the body to get rid of it at a faster pace. The vinegar will help to break down the acid crystals, making it much easier to flush them from the body.

So take a page from history and, like the wise Swamp Fox, add some cider vinegar to your diet.
